Behind the form

The handcrafted process behind a Donizza.art concrete planter

BEHIND THE FORM

Layer by layer, the material is shaped by hand, slowly building its strength, proportions, and individual character. Nothing is rushed. Each surface requires attention, each detail carries the trace of the maker, and every stage influences what the finished form will become.

This is not an object released from a production line, nor a simple cast removed from a mold within minutes. It is the result of time, experience, and an intimate understanding of the material.

Because true craftsmanship is not only visible in the final form. It is written into everything that lies beneath it.

Raw concrete forms in the Donizza.art studio

Crafted to Last

Noble Materials

Every Donizza.art planter is created from our proprietary concrete composite, developed to achieve an exceptional balance of durability, lightness, and refined aesthetics.

By combining carefully selected natural materials with advanced GRC technology, we create timeless forms designed to retain their beauty for many years, indoors and outdoors.

Premium Portland Cement

Provides the structural foundation, ensuring outstanding strength, stability, and a clean, consistent colour.

Metakaolin

Refines the concrete’s microstructure, reducing water absorption while improving frost resistance and preventing efflorescence.

Selected Quartz Sand

Creates a dense, uniform matrix and contributes to the smooth, elegant finish of every planter.

Quartz Powder

Enhances the density of the composite, increasing resistance to abrasion and everyday wear.

AR Glass Fibres with Zirconia

Form an internal reinforcement that allows slim, lightweight walls while maintaining exceptional strength and crack resistance.

Advanced Superplasticiser

Reduces the water content of the mix, producing a denser, stronger, and more durable composite with an exceptionally smooth surface.

The Architecture of Form

True quality is never accidental. Every Donizza.art planter is shaped through a carefully refined process that combines architectural precision with artisanal craftsmanship.

Hand-applied layers gradually build a lightweight GRC composite of remarkable strength, creating timeless forms designed to endure changing seasons while preserving their elegance for years to come.

Layer 01

Face Coat

The first layer forms the outer face of the planter. It meets the mold directly and defines the refined surface that becomes the canvas for further finishing.

Layer 02

Reinforced GRC Core

GRC concrete reinforced with zirconium mesh gives the structure exceptional strength while maintaining relatively slim walls and a lower weight.

Layer 03

GRC Base

A further layer of our custom GRC composite provides the form with stability, rigidity, and optimal mass.

Layer 04

Protective Barrier

Ceresit CR 90 mineral waterproofing protects the interior against water, soil moisture, and fertilisers penetrating the concrete structure.

Protection That Preserves the Form

Exterior & Interior Protection

Each Donizza.art planter is protected against moisture from both sides. A finish-specific hydrophobic coating reduces water and dirt absorption without concealing the surface’s natural texture, tonal variation, or individual irregularities.

Inside, Ceresit CR 90 mineral waterproofing forms a durable barrier against water and soil moisture. Together, these protective layers limit prolonged saturation, support resistance to freeze–thaw cycles, and help preserve the planter’s character and structural integrity over time.

Sculpting the Detail

Once the material is fully cured and bound, each planter undergoes manual processing. The surface is sanded and prepared for further finishing. It is at this stage that the distinct character of each collection begins to emerge.

Raw Minimalism

A tribute to the pure form of concrete. In the Cemento collection, the raw beauty of concrete takes centre stage.

After sanding, the surface receives only a professional hydrophobic coating that protects the material while preserving its natural, architectural character.

Hand-applied mineral finish creating organic depth

Organic Depth

The Vecchio, Travertino, and Muro collections are crafted using decorative mineral plasters.

The surface is then coated with a tinted decorative varnish that highlights the depth of the texture, creating a multidimensional impression of ancient stone and weathered rock. The entire surface is sealed with a hydrophobic coating.

Metallic and oxidised finishes shaped by hand

Industrial Alchemy

The Corten, Ruggine, and Metallo collections are made using specialised resin plasters, allowing us to achieve distinctive metal, rust, and refined industrial surface effects.

Each finish captures a different expression of transformed metal: oxidised steel, layered rust, or the patina of precious metals.

Every Texture Tells a Story

Some stories are written with words.
Ours begin with stone, mineral textures, and the quiet rhythm of human hands.

Every Donizza.art planter starts as a raw form, but its true character emerges only through the artisan’s touch. Each layer is applied by hand, every texture shaped individually, and every finish responds differently to light, material, and time.

No formula can recreate these subtle variations, because they are born in the moment of creation.
